Wedding tips - Dos and Don'ts from The Floral Fixx
Let a professional handle anything perishable.
Ok, I know what you’re thinking, “Of course she’s going to say that, she’s a florist.” This is true and I recognize my bias. However, you will have enough things to worry about the day of. Florists know how to take care of flowers so that they don’t turn brown in the cold or so that they don’t shrivel up in the heat. Perishables are tricky and it’s not worth the risk!
Go to some wedding shows.
Wedding shows have A LOT to offer brides. They not only get you familiar with all the wedding vendors out there, but they can inspire you or give you a decorating idea.
Consider options based on your budget.
What I mean by this is, you don’t have to do a traditional wedding reception with a full, served dinner and an open bar. If you are on a limited budget, consider a later evening reception and serve appies and finger food, or a Sunday brunch wedding. People won’t see it as cheap, they’ll appreciate the variety and think of your wedding as something creative and different.
Don’t get your heart set on one venue.
Nowadays, venues are booked 1.5-2 years in advance of a wedding date! Lots of venues that something valuable and beautiful to offer and it’s best to keep an open mind and not let yourself get stuck on your one perfect venue. Remember how much you can decorate! When you go to see a space, think about what you could add to make it your special place.
No need to specify how your guests should dress.
This may be less of a tip than a pet peeve of mine but it deserves a mention nonetheless. If you’re going to write “formal” on your invitations, know that means black tuxedos and long dresses. This means “black tie”. If you want suits and cocktail dresses, this is referred to as “semi-formal”. With all that said however, you probably can trust that if you’re getting married at The Fort Garry Hotel, your guests will know they can’t wear jeans to your reception. No need to specify.
And probably the most important –
Don’t sweat the small stuff.
All you have to do is keep two things in mind and never deviate from them – you can’t please everyone and this is your day. If you’re always able to live by these words, you will be just fine. You’re getting married! Be happy and don’t let anyone or anything ruin that for you.
